Japan Konjac Sponge

Konjac Sponge is a traditional Japanese skincare item that has been around for over 100 years, originally created in the area of Gunma Prefecture, Japan. In the past, people in Gunma grew their own konjac potatoes in their fields and processed them by hand, producing only enough for their families.

Uneaten konjac was repeatedly frozen and dried by hanging it outside for a few days during the harsh winter season. After this process, only konjac fibers remained, which could be used as sponges. People in the past harnessed the characteristics of konjac and the natural environment to craft konjac sponges. In a time when clothing was less gentle, parents desired to wash their newborns comfortably and safely. The konjac sponge was born out of such parental love. (Photo: courtesy of Yamamoto Ranch)
